Re: CLINTWOOD vs VOLUNTEER
Really? I haven't had much to say about Clintwood football at all, Burrhead. But, it was jut a week or so ago, I commented that I could see Clintwood potentially having a 8-2 or even a 9-1 season.
If that's negative, then I can only imagine what some think about what is said of other teams on here.

Re: CLINTWOOD vs VOLUNTEER
Heres a copy of the article from tricitiessports.com about the Vol/GC scrimmage. Rememeber this was probably Volunteers 3rd, maybe 4th scrimmage, and GC's first.
CHURCH HILL -- Volunteer started slow, but finished fast in a scrimmage against Gate City on the Falcon field on Friday.
Officially, it was five TDs for Volunteer to four for Gate City, but both teams played reserves for much of the second half and, for the most part, the teams were about even and both showed offensive firepower.
"It was good for both of us,'' said Volunteer coach Scott Rider. "We wanted someone who would give us a good, physical scrimmage and they did. I was disappointed how we started. If it had been a real game, we'd been in trouble. But we responded and came back and got better, but we still have a long ways to go.''
"We started out okay,'' said Gate City coach Nick Colobro, who saw his team get on the board early with a 40-yard pass from Jon Kerns to Eric Hutchins, then score again on a 12-yard pass from Kerns to Hutchins. "But I'm worried about our conditioning.''
Shane Barlow takes break for Volunteer. He scored two TDs in scrimmage. TriCitiesSports.com photo by Ron Bliss.
Volunteer came back to drive the field and get a one-yard TD run by Shane Barlow. Keith Cradic then hooked up with Aaron Bennett for a 60-yard strike that evened the count at two TDs each and Bennett then picked off a Kerns pass and returned it for Volunteer's third score.
Tihlee Anderson, last year's starting quarterback who has been used some at wide receiver, then hauled in a 70-yard strike from Kerns to tie the teams at three TDS each.
"Jon and Tihlee are both playing quarterback,'' said Colobro. "We plan to use both of them, but Tihlee will also be a wide receiver. We want guys to be able to play more than one position so we have different weapons in different spots.''
One of the area's best quarterbacks, Cradic then drove his Falcon team into Gate City territory with Barlow going across for his second TD from five yards out. He did it by both passing and running.
"Keith is a dual threat,'' said Rider, "though he has to work some on his extra points.''
Rider is not totally happy with Barlow, though he scored twice.
"Shane needs to get into better shape,'' said Rider. "But we have three weeks before our first game, so he has time to do so.''
Anderson then switched to quarterback and led a TD drive for Gate City's fourth TD. He passed his team to deep in Volunteer territory, mixing in an occasional run, and Tyler Parks took the ball the final seven yards for his only score of the night.
Parks found little running room for most of the night.
"Games are won and lost on the line of scrimmage -- both on offense and defense -- and we have to be able to win that battle,'' said Colobro, who was impressed with Rider's team.
"I saw them last spring against South and I thought they were a good football team then,'' said Colobro, who last faced a Rider-coached team when Rider was head coach at Marion in the old Highlands District. "I expected them to come out in more of a spread offense, but they used more 'I' than I thought they would.''
Reserve David Mowell broke off a 65-yard TD run, but it was flagged for block in the back around the 30 and Cody Riner finished the drive with a 20-yard run with Volunteer reserves facing Gate City reserves.
"We have two weeks to get ready for Richlands,'' said Colobro, whose team opens on the road at the home of the Virginia Group AA state champions on Aug. 24. "We have some work to do.''
Lineman Quinton Jones was injured early in the scrimmage and will be evaluated. Everyone else appeared to come away healthy. Volunteer opens in three weeks against Sullivan East at home.
Re: CLINTWOOD vs VOLUNTEER
Just passing on what I was told and from what i saw last night I am inclined to take there word for it
Re: CLINTWOOD vs VOLUNTEER
I have little doubt that Clintwood played down a bit. Taking Robinson out did take away the back who could make a big hit on defense or get that 2 tough yards to keep a drive going. Like Ironlung said, that might have made it 28-14 or something along those lines, but last night, Clintwood would not have beaten them. Now is Clintwood a bit over-rated, maybe, or maybe some are under-rating Volunteer.
One thing I gotta ask, that was supposedly Volunteers third scrimmage?? They have 3 scrimmages over there and then it was still 3 weeks till their first game? That either means that they have way to many scrimmages and start practices/scrimmages in what June?
Re: CLINTWOOD vs VOLUNTEER
Actually, I don't know that they have a limit in TN on scrimmages. I remember scrimmaging in a 3-way with Sullivan East and West Greene and it was our 1st scrimmage and East's 4th.
Going through CoachT, Volunteer scrimmaged GC in their 2nd scrimmage from what I found. There was a 2 week gap between the Betsy scrimmage and the GC scrimmage so there is a good possibility that something may have taken place in between. They defeated Elizabethton, then GC, the played Sullivan South on Tuesday after GC, and the Friday they participated in the conference jamboree in Morristown.
Re: CLINTWOOD vs VOLUNTEER
What I'm wondering about is if the Clintwood folks had an opportunity to watch game film of Volunteer before this game? If so, did they not look that impressive at all in the films?
By the predictions made here, there was no indication at all that Volunteer is such a powerhouse.

Re: CLINTWOOD vs VOLUNTEER

Counts saw the film on Volunteer beforehand and was in total disagreement with the remarks that supr-beast made about them. He said he thought they looked very good.

Here were my fist impressions from last week
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Huge across both the O and D lines almost everone goes only 1 way. Hard running RB and a solid QB and tall quick recevers. I DO think that Clintwood will have a speed advantage going into the game but if it keeps raining I am not sure how much that will help </div></div>

I was right about everything BUT Clintwood having the speed advantage (Not Burton speed but a tad faster than PV last season)
